Residential development began in the late 1800's with Kirkwood evolving into a streetcar suburb of Atlanta by the turn of the century. The Craftsman and Victorian homes of the time are still the prevalent style. In the early 1980's, a surge of newcomers began renovating these historic homes in a trend that continues to this day.

The Kirkwood Neighbors' Organization (KNO), working with Georgia Tech, obtained official recognition for Kirkwood as an Historic District on the National Register in 2007, due in part to the fact that the  Battle of Atlanta began in Kirkwood. An historical marker with specific details can be found near the intersection on Memorial Drive and Clay Street.

Each year since 2005, Kirkwood hosts the B*ATL Event an"explosion of fun, food and history" to commemorate the Battle of Atlanta.  July 22, 2009 marks the 145th Anniversary. The celebration will last from July 17 -19 and feature a Gala Dinner and house tour, a 5k Run, tours, re-enactments and historic performances with local shopping and dining available. Other festivals include: Kirkwood Spring Fling with proceeds going to community projects and the Kirkwood Wine Stroll.

Kirkwood is a very walkable community and is serviced by the Eastlake MARTA station. Three public parks are available ; Gillem Park,  Coan Park and Bessie Branham Park.

For you serious burger fans, you should know that the Wall Street Journal named Ann's Snack Bar in Kirkwood as home to the best hamburger in America in 2007. In operation since the early 70's,  Ann's is the home of the "Ghetto Burger" and the equally famous proprietor known to everyone as "Miss Ann".  Be forewarned: Miss Ann has a firm set of house rules and little tolerance for those who disregard them. Wait your turn patiently and remember that rudeness is considered a felony in some parts of Georgia.
